A carer is someone who, without payment, provides help and support to a partner, child, relative, friend or neighbour, who could not manage without their help. This could be due to age, physical or mental illness, addiction or disability. A young carer is a child or young person under the age of 18 carrying out significant caring tasks and assuming a level of responsibility for another person, which would normally be taken by an adult.

Carers UK Campaign Carers UK are campaigning for better support for carers. They are collecting signatures to present to the Prime Minister after the general election. In 2010 social care is in crisis and in need of urgent reform. The main carers' benefit is worth just £1.52 an hour, well short of the minimum wage of £5.73. (and even less than that if you're retired, disabled or on a low income). www.carersuk.org/Newsandcampaigns/Itstime
Free Self Study Programme for Carers Caring with Confidence is a free knowledge and skills based programme which aims to help unpaid carers make a positive difference to their lives and the lives of the people they care for. See the flyer here.
Carers Take a Break Project - Summer Term 2010 Free Courses These courses, developed by Bracknell & Wokingham College in partnership with Wokingham Borough Council, provide a programme of bespoke learning opportunities for carers. Obstacles and barriers are removed to encourage a positive and rewarding learning experience. Carers develop the confidence to move forward and progress to learn new skills knowing that support and guidance is available when needed. This helps to enrich their lives and to develop the tools and skills for planning future learning and/or preparing for work when their caring responsibilities end. The project supports participation costs including course fees, resources and those related to dependent care and ‘needy’ travel. All courses are held in a relaxed and friendly environment in small supportive groups. See the flyer here.
